It's recognized as a Texas Superstar® for its remarkable resilience to heat, drought, and humidity, making it a beloved choice for Texas native plant gardens. This charming plant thrives best when nestled in the back of flower beds, reaching a height and width of three feet. It’s a tough plant, hardy up to Zone 7.

This salvia loves well-drained soil and basking in full sunlight, becoming wonderfully drought-tolerant once it’s established. Just remember to give it regular watering until it's settled in, and during the hot summer days, it would appreciate a drink once a week, especially if rainfall is less than an inch. While it’s low maintenance, taking a moment to deadhead spent blooms can encourage even more flowers to bloom. If your soil is already rich, you can choose whether or not to use a general fertilizer in spring and summer to boost flower production. Keeping around two inches of mulch will also do wonders. After the first frost, cut it back right to the ground and add some mulch for winter protection. The beautiful part is that once established, this plant will reseed itself, and you can easily transplant the seedlings to other spots in your garden.

The Henry Duelberg Salvia has an interesting discovery story too. Once they’re established, these hardy plants can withstand heat and tolerate moderate dryness quite well. To keep them blooming beautifully, remember to deadhead spent flowers. Generally, Agastache hybrids can endure winter conditions in at least USDA Zone 6. If you’re concerned about winter hardiness, it's a good idea to place them in sheltered spots (like southern exposures) and leave their leaves and flower stems intact throughout the winter for that extra layer of protection. Using sandy or gravelly mulches can also help safeguard the plants and prevent rot. It’s also a wonderful selection for drawing in cherished pollinators like bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds, while remaining unfazed by deer, who seem to prefer tastier options. With its narrow, toothless, dark green leaves and large, daisy-like flowers, you’ll notice the charming drooping, pale pinkish-purple petals surrounding a striking coppery-orange center cone. These vibrant blooms grace our gardens on sturdy stems that reach 2-3 feet tall during the long summer days. This delightful species stands out with its thin, parallel-veined leaves and relaxed flowers that gently droop downwards. You'll find the most stunning flower displays from late June to late July, with a few enchanting blooms lingering into autumn.

This resilient plant loves to grow in dry to medium, well-drained soil, thriving best in full sun to partial shade. It can withstand heat, drought, humidity, and even less-than-ideal soils! To keep it healthy, remember to divide any overcrowded clumps about every four years. Most of the time, these lovely coneflowers will bloom again without needing deadheading, but if you remove the spent flowers promptly, they’ll look even nicer. And don’t forget to leave a few seed heads so these beautiful flowers can reseed themselves.

Nectar Source Plant: American Lady Butterfly (Vanessa virginiensis), Red Admiral Butterfly (Vanessa Atalanta), Great spangled fritillary (Speyeria cybele)

BONAP MAP

Height: 2’-3’

Spread: 1’-1.5’

Bloom: June-July

Light: Full Sun-Part Shade

Water: Low-Medium

Zone: 3-10

Origin: Texas, Eastern & Central North America

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0467/3113/3093/files/Echinacea-pallida-pale-purple-coneflower.jpg?v=1731306892
wild-petunia
Wild Petunia

Ruellia strepens

Common names include Wild Petunia, Limestone Ruellia, Limestone Wild Petunia, Woodland Petunia and Smooth Wild Petunia.

A charming plant native to rich open woods, thickets, and borders of streams and ponds through much of Texas, central and eastern U.S. This lovely clump-forming perennial typically grows between 1 and 3 feet tall.
