Deschampsia cespitosa
Deschampsia cespitosa, or tufted hair grass, is a delightful clump-forming grass that many enjoy for its ornamental qualities. It creates a lovely, low, and dense tussock, reaching up to 16 inches tall, with slender, arching blades that can grow as long as 2 feet. In the summer, numerous flower stems rise from the lush mound, reaching heights of 3 feet, showcasing beautiful, airy panicles up to 20 inches long. These tiny flowers bloom in a lovely mix of gold, silver, purple, and green, forming a stunning cloud over the foliage, especially enchanting when backlit by the sun. After blooming, the flower panicles take on a charming yellowish-tan shade as the seeds ripen, staying visually appealing throughout winter. This grass is a rare ornamental type that thrives in shady spots.
It's easy to grow in average, medium, well-drained soils, especially in partial shade, and it enjoys moist, nutrient-rich soils. Remember to cut back old foliage to the ground in late winter before the new shoots emerge. If you'd like to tidy things up, you can also remove the flowering stems in the fall or leave them for added winter interest. While it's excellent for moderately shady locations, excessive shade may limit flowering. If you're in a mild Texas winter, you might even see some semi-evergreen foliage keeping a bit of its green color. In ideal growing conditions, this grass may even self-seed.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
