Callirhoe involucrata

Common names include Winecup and Purple Poppy Mallow, and Buffalo Rose.

An attractive, spreading perennial with a long taproot. Best known for its massive display of chalice-shaped magenta flowers on trailing, uniquely lobed leaves. The flowers close up in the evening, open wide in the morning, and stay closed after pollination on long, graceful axillary stalks. Most frequently occurs in dryish, rocky soils in prairies, fields and along roadsides throughout the semi-arid, south-central portion of the Great Plains of the U.S. with scattered populations to the east and west.

Wonderful as a groundcover especially mixed in with grass or other groundcovers, gracefully draping over a retaining wall, or in a charming hanging basket/container arrangement. Great in border fronts, rock gardens, wild gardens, and naturalized areas or pocket prairies.

Easily grown in dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils in full sun. Can tolerate part to dappled shade in Texas. Too much moisture and shade can cause root rot, especially in northern states. Thrives in depleted, gritty soils. May self-seed in the garden in optimum growing conditions. Its long taproot gives plant good drought tolerance once established but makes transplanting of established plants difficult.

Larval host for the Gray Hairstreak. Nectar source for native bees and butterflies.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
