Viguiera stenoloba

Skeleton-leaf goldeneye is a shrub that grows on rocky ground from the Rio Grande Valley to the Edwards Plateau, west to the Trans-Pecos. It has dark green leaves that are skeletal in appearance, golden daisies, and a rounded growth habit. It is an attractive plant that can be grown as an ornamental shrub or sub-shrub. It can thrive in most well-drained sites in full sun and should be pruned regularly to maintain a dense, shrubby appearance. Although the plant is evergreen in its native habitat, it is only root-hardy farther north.

Skeleton-leaf goldeneye blooms intermittently throughout the summer and heavily in the fall. Its leaves are known to contain aromatic oils that discourage deer browsing. Additionally, the plant serves as a larval host for some butterfly species.

Nectar Source Plants: Common Checkered Skipper (Pyrgus communis), Gulf Fritillary (Dione vanillae), Large Wood Nymph (Cercyonis pegala), Monarch (Danaus plexippus), Texas crescentspot (Anthanassa texana), Zebra Longwing ( Heliconius charithonia)
