Agave Blue Glow is a stunning smaller Agave that forms solitary rosettes. The plant grows 2 feet tall and 3 feet across, with 18-inch long, 1-1 1/2-inch broad blue-green leaves. These leaves have red margins edged with yellow, bearing tiny, soft spines and a stout, short, red terminal spine. Once mature, the plant produces a 10-foot-tall, unbranched, reddish flower spike. Sometimes, this spike is solitary, while at other times, it is subtended by numerous smaller 2 to 3-foot spikes. These spikes are covered most of their length with greenish-white flowers with long red stamens.

Agave 'Blue Glow' is believed to be a hybrid between Agave attenuata and Agave ocahui. Reportedly, a Kelly Griffin hybrid was developed while he worked at Rancho Soledad Nursery in Rancho Santa Fe. Despite its parentage, the plant looks nothing like either parent. However, it appears to inherit the more durable, more rigid leaves, smaller size, solitary habit, and sharp terminal spine from Agave ocahui while getting the broader leaves and blue-green color from Agave attenuata.

Plant the Agave Blue Glow in full to part sun in well-draining soil for optimal growth. It requires little irrigation and is excellent in containers or groups, mainly where backlighting can showcase the red and yellow margins. The flowers attract birds and bees.
