Ruellia strepens, which is also known as wild petunia or smooth ruellia, is a native plant of Texas. It is commonly found in rich open woods, thickets, and along streams and ponds in the northern part of the state. This clump-forming perennial grows up to 1-3' tall and is either glabrous or sparingly hairy. Its flowers are pale lilac to lavender in color, with five flaring lobes, and can grow up to 2" long. The flowers bloom from May to September in the leaf axils. The leaves are opposite, oval-shaped, and can grow up to 6" long.This plant prefers growing in moist, organically rich, well-drained soils in part shade. It can also tolerate close to full shade.
