Also known as Indiangrass, Yellow Indiangrass, Indian Grass
Sorghastrum nutans, or Indiangrass, is a lovely warm-season perennial grass that's native to Texas. You can typically find it flourishing in prairies, glades, and open woods across the state. Interestingly, it was once a prominent grass in the expansive tallgrass prairie that stretched across much of the Midwest. Indian grass usually reaches a height of 3 to 5 feet and boasts an elegant upright shape with beautiful blue-green foliage. As fall approaches, its leaves transform into a vibrant orange-yellow, and they often hold onto some color even through winter.
In late summer, you’ll notice sturdy, vertical flowering stems that can grow 5 to 6 feet tall. These stems are adorned with narrow, feathery, light brown flower panicles, which are highlighted with cheerful yellow stamens. As the season changes, the panicles take on a rich bronze or chestnut brown hue and eventually fade to a lovely gray, adding visual interest that lasts well into winter. Plus, the seeds of Indian grass are popular with birds, making it a wonderful addition to your garden.
This resilient grass does well in a variety of conditions, thriving in dry to medium, well-drained soils under full sun. It can adapt to a range of soil types, including heavy clays, and remarkably, it can even flourish in poor, dry, infertile soils. However, in moist, nutrient-rich environments, it might become a bit more open or floppy. When grown under ideal conditions, it has a knack for naturalizing through self-seeding. For the best health, remember to cut it back to the ground in late winter or early spring, just before the new growth begins.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
