Symphyotrichum pilosum

Symphyotrichum pilosum, affectionately known as frost aster (its hairy stems seem like they’re covered in thick frost!), is a lovely herbaceous perennial from the aster family. Typically reaching heights of about 4 feet tall and just as wide, it showcases leafy, sometimes branching stems that create a charming display. This delightful plant thrives in various habitats, including upland prairies, weedy meadows, pastures, open woodlands, limestone glades, and even along old fields or roadsides—from Quebec and Ontario down to Texas and Florida.

From summer to fall, it bursts into bloom, showcasing beautiful flowers in branching clusters. Each flower radiates with 15 to 35 delicate white rays around a cheerful yellow center disc, which adds a touch of reddish-purple charm as it matures. After blooming, these flowers transform into interesting fruits—a dry seed topped with a tuft of fluffy white hairs.

For the best growth, frost aster loves moist, semi-shaded woodland areas, although it can tolerate full sun in cooler summer climates. In warmer areas where summer temperatures soar past 90 degrees F, it definitely appreciates a little part shade. Plus, it can handle occasional flooding! If you prefer a shorter plant, don’t hesitate to pinch back the stems in late spring to early summer. Just a heads-up: These plants can spread quite actively through self-seeding, so keep an eye on them.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
