Common names include Yellow Wild Indigo, Green Wild Indigo, Bush Pea, Yellow Wisteria, and Yellow False Indigo.
A lovely upright perennial that typically grows to heights of 2 to 3 ft, up to 4ft when in bloom. This charming plant is native to the open habitats along the Gulf Coasts of Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, and its range extends northward into Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri. In spring, it showcases petite yellow flowers, resembling little peas, beautifully arranged in upright racemes that can reach up to 12 to 15 inches tall. These delightful flowers sit atop yellowish-green stems that rise gracefully above a mound of clover-like, trifoliate, blue-green leaves, with leaflets reaching up to 2 inches long. Flowers transform into inflated spherical seed pods that change from tan to brown as they ripen, adding a touch of ornamental interest. The stems adorned with seed pods also make for beautiful additions to dried flower arrangements.
Larval host plant to the Wild Indigo Duskywing. As a member of the legume family, Yellow Wild Indigo can aid in the nitrogen fixation of soil, making it a great companion plant that helps improve long-term health of its neighboring plants.
This perennial thrives in average, dry to medium, well-drained soil, enjoying full sun to partial shade—full sun is where it feels most at home! It’s wonderfully resilient, tolerating drought and poor soil conditions. As it matures, it forms slowly expanding clumps with deep, extensive root systems. Once established, it’s best to leave the plants undisturbed. Over time, they develop a more shrubby appearance and tend to open up after blooming. If you want to keep your plant looking rounded and healthy, a little trimming or shearing of the foliage after blooming can help, although it does mean you’ll be removing some of those pretty seed pods that are starting to develop.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
