Hesperaloe funifera

Also known as Giant Hesperaloe, New Mexico False Yucca, Samandoce

Upright, bold, and striking growth habits define this slow-growing evergreen plant. It showcases stiff, narrow, green leaves that cluster in upright formations, reaching heights of up to six feet. The leaf margins feature distinctive white, stringy fibers that gradually peel away as the plant matures. In summer, a greenish-white flower stalk emerges from the center, producing nocturnal flowers that attract bats and hummingbirds for pollination. After blooming, the flowers develop woody capsules containing flat, black seeds.

Due to its striking foliage, this plant makes a beautiful addition to decorative pots along open walls or near large pools and ponds. It can also serve effectively as a streetscape shrub or for mass plantings in medians. Native to the Chihuahuan Desert in northeastern Mexico and southern Texas, this plant thrives at elevations up to 7,500 feet.

Hardy down to about five degrees Fahrenheit, it can survive extended periods without supplemental irrigation once established. The Giant Hesperaloe prefers well-draining, somewhat rocky soils and flourishes in full sun, basking in ample reflected heat. As a very low-maintenance accent plant, it is relatively easy to grow. Newly planted shrubs should be protected with chicken wire, as rabbits enjoy munching on their foliage.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
