Sedum spurium 'Red Carpet'

Sedum spurium, commonly known as Caucasian stonecrop or two-row stonecrop, is a low-growing, mat-forming sedum that makes for a fantastic ground cover option! It's originally from the beautiful Caucasus region. This charming evergreen plant usually grows to about 3-6 inches tall but loves to spread its cheerful presence 18-24 inches wide with its creeping, branching stems that easily root at the nodes. The plant features thick, succulent, opposite, obovate, flattened leaves with lovely wedge-shaped bases adorned with toothed margins. These medium green leaves have a special touch of reddish tinges along the edges, giving it extra character. While the lower leaves are deciduous, the fresh leaves near the tips remain evergreen and showcase a stunning deep burgundy color in the fall to prepare for winter. The leaves are beautifully arranged in two rows along the stems, which is why it’s affectionately known as the two-row stonecrop.

This lively plant bursts into bloom from late spring to mid-summer, showcasing tiny, 5-petaled, star-shaped, pinkish-red flowers that form dense, 4-branched inflorescences atop upright reddish flower stems. These lovely flowers are wonderful for attracting butterflies to your garden, adding a touch of magic!

Caucasian stonecrop thrives in acidic, average, dry to medium moisture, well-drained soils, basking in full sun. It can withstand a bit of light shade too and prefers sandy or gravelly soils, even tolerating poor ones. Good drainage is key for it to flourish, and it’s drought tolerant, making it pretty easy to care for! Just remember to avoid overwatering. When planting as a ground cover, spacing the plants 12 inches apart works well. They can be easily propagated through cuttings or division, happily rooting where the nodes touch the ground. In warmer winter climates, this plant stays evergreen, but in colder areas, it might not!

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
