Cercis canadensis var. texensis 'white'
Var. texensis, previously known as Cercis reniformis, is a type of eastern redbud native to Oklahoma and Texas. It has a shorter, more compact shape than the original species, with a height of 15-20 feet when it matures. Unlike the original species, it has a slightly higher drought tolerance, and its buds and flowers are darker and brighter wine red. Its leaves are also thicker, glossier, broader, and darker green, often with a more kidney-shaped outline. The leaf tips are rounded or blunt, not pointed, and they can withstand winter temperatures down to USDA Zone 6 (the original species can only handle Zone 4).
This tree is easy to grow in average, medium-moisture, well-drained soils in full sun to part shade. It thrives best in moderately fertile soils with consistent moisture, so avoid wet or poorly drained soils. Due to its sensitivity to transplanting, it should be planted when young and left undisturbed.
