Andropogon gerardii 'Red October'

'Red October' stands out with its charmingly shorter height, vibrant green summer leaves, and stunning scarlet red color in the fall. It's a fantastic choice for any garden, boasting a lovely clumping form and upright growth. In spring, you’ll notice the fresh leaves emerging in deep green with delightful red highlights. They shine bright green throughout the summer, then transition to a beautiful purplish-red by late summer before dazzling you with a vivid scarlet after the first fall frost. You'll also enjoy burgundy red flowers that bloom in August, and these lovely plants typically reach about 6' tall.

This grass thrives effortlessly in average, well-drained soils, whether they’re dry or medium, and loves basking in full sun. It's adaptable, flourishing in a variety of soils and conditions. While it produces plenty of growth in moist, fertile soils, it stands strong and tall in drier, less fertile areas, making it resilient in different environments. When growing conditions are just right, you’ll see it self-seed quite freely. It develops a vast and sturdy root system and may take a little time to establish, but once it does, its drought tolerance is impressive and maintenance is a breeze. Just remember to cut the stems to the ground in late winter before the new shoots arrive.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
