Also known as Inland Sea Oats, Indian Wood Oats, Wild Oats, River Oats, Flathead Oats, Upland Oats, Upland Sea Oats
Inland Sea Oats is an upright, clump-forming ornamental grass. You can often find it in woodlands, moist bluffs, and rocky slopes along streams. This grass features flat, drooping seed heads that hang in terminal clusters on slightly arching stems. Initially, the seed heads are a vibrant green, but by late summer, they transform into a purplish bronze. Its common name, inland sea oats, is from its seed heads that resemble those of oats.
While it can handle less-than-perfect soils, it truly prefers moist, fertile soil and stands out as one of the more shade-tolerant ornamental grasses. This grass can self-seed and might spread quite well. Leaving the foliage in place through the winter adds character to your landscape while helping protect the crowns from chilly temperatures. Come early spring, it's good to cut it back to the ground for fresh growth.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 10-15 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.

The employee was very helpful showing me different native plant options for an area I was planting along my fence. Thank you!

I live in coastal Va. There is much confusion on the internet as to whether Inland Oats will grow here. I bought them thinking they were "sea oats" which survive salt intrusion and spray. And grow in direct sunlight. So the inland oats are now planted in semi-shade, in raised beds. We shall see.

These plants were packed better than any plants I have ever ordered. They arrived very safely, and were moist, not beaten half to death and dry from the delivery distance and trauma. I am super happy with them.

One of the only grasses that grow well in shade other than liriope. It has a really pretty chevron shaped seed head. Spring to fall, and even winter, it has interesting foliage. Spreads easily though not too aggressively.
