Baptisia australis

Also known as Blue Wild Indigo, Wild Blue Indigo, Blue False Indigo

Baptisia australis, commonly known as blue false indigo or wild indigo, is a lovely tall perennial plant that thrives in the rich woods, thickets, and along the gentle banks of streams in the eastern United States. Its stunning purple flowers, resembling lupines, bloom in beautiful upright clusters atop tall spikes, nestled above a mound of charming, clover-like bluish-green leaves. As spring unfolds, these flowers give way to fascinating seed pods that turn a striking charcoal black when they’re ripe, adding a delightful ornamental touch to your garden. Fun fact: children once used the blackened seed pods as rattles, and they’re now cherished for use in dried flower arrangements.

This resilient plant is a joy to grow, thriving in well-drained soil under the warm embrace of full sun to partial shade. It’s drought-tolerant, too, flourishing even in poorer soils. As it matures, Baptisia australis forms lovely, slowly expanding clumps with robust root systems, and once it’s settled in, it likes to stay undisturbed. While you can grow it from seed, be patient, as it takes a few years to develop. You’ll notice that it takes on a lovely shrubby look and may open up after blooming. If you’d like to keep its shape round and reduce the need for staking, trimming or shearing the foliage after blooming is a great option, though keep in mind it will also remove the developing seed pods. Enjoy growing this beautiful plant.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
