Phlox subulata 'Emerald Blue'
Phlox subulata, also known as moss phlox, mountain phlox, or creeping phlox, is a sun-loving perennial that reaches 6 inches in height and spreads 24 inches wide. This plant is characterized by its mat-forming growth, creeping habit, and linear to awl-shaped leaves that remain partially green in winter. In mid-spring, it produces tufts of notched flowers. Native to the dry, rocky, or sandy regions of open woodlands and slopes from the Appalachians to Tennessee, it blooms fragrant, tubular flowers in loose clusters between April and May. The flowers can be red-purple, violet-purple, pink, or, though rarely, white, each featuring five petal-like rounded lobes with a unique notch pattern. The leaves, shaped like awls, are green, with 'subulata' being the Latin term for this leaf shape. The name moss phlox comes from its resemblance to moss vegetation mats. Various cultivars are available, showcasing flower colors like blue/purple, pink, red, and white, and they attract butterflies and other insect pollinators.
This plant thrives in humusy, medium-moist, well-drained soil and prefers full sun, although it benefits from some dappled light during hot, humid summers. Proper soil drainage is crucial. Phlox subulata flourishes in sandy or gravelly soils and is more tolerant of hot, dry conditions compared to other phlox species. Given ideal conditions, it will self-seed. To maintain shape, encourage denser growth, and possibly promote additional blooming, cut back the stems by half after flowering.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
