Phlox subulata 'Creeping Pink'

Phlox subulata, often referred to as moss phlox, mountain phlox, or creeping phlox, is a delightful, mat-forming perennial that loves the sunshine! Typically growing about 6 inches tall and stretching out to 24 inches wide, this charming plant features a beautiful creeping habit with lovely, linear to awl-shaped leaves that keep a hint of green even in winter. In mid-spring, it bursts forth with lovely tufts of notched flowers, creating a vibrant display. Native to the dry, rocky, or sandy areas and open woodlands, particularly in the Appalachian region south of Tennessee, these plants bring a touch of beauty to their surroundings. Between April and May, you’ll find loose clusters of fragrant, tubular flowers that are sure to attract attention.

Each flower showcases five petal-like, rounded lobes, beautifully notched in a unique way. The leaves, being linear to awl-shaped, contribute to its charming character, and interestingly, the name 'subulata' is derived from the Latin term for these distinctive leaves. The common name, moss phlox, reflects how its leafy mats give off a mossy appearance. It’s also worth noting that this lovely plant is a favorite among butterflies and other insect pollinators.

Among them, the Trot Pink cultivar stands out with the largest flowers of any Phlox subulata and boasts impressive vigor. These blooms are a soft, lovely purple-pink, adding a cheerful note to any garden.

For the best results, plant them in humusy, medium-moisture, well-drained soil and bask them in full sun. They enjoy a bit of dappled shade in hot, humid summers. Ensuring good soil drainage is crucial as these resilient plants thrive in sandy or gravely soils and handle hot, dry conditions better than many other phlox varieties. When everything is just right, you might even see them self-seed! After they finish blooming, a simple tip is to cut back the stems by half. This will help maintain their shape, encourage denser growth, and stimulate some delightful reblooming.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
