Camassia angusta, often affectionately called prairie camas, prairie hyacinth, or wild hyacinth, is a delightful spring-flowering bulbous perennial from the lily family. In spring, you can expect to see one or more lovely flowering stalks rising from its charming, upright to drooping basal foliage. These leaves are long, narrow, glabrous, and have a beautiful medium to dark green hue, resembling graceful straps. The flowering stalks proudly showcase a terminal raceme of lavender to pale purple flowers, blooming in a stunning sequence from the bottom to the top during late spring. Each flower transforms into a small seed capsule, about 1/3 inch long. After the flowers fade, the leaves turn a lovely yellow and wither, marking the plant's transition toward mid-summer dormancy.
This wonderful bulb is native to the prairies and rocky, open grounds stretching from Illinois and Missouri down to Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. It flourishes best in moist, fertile, and acidic humusy soils that are well-drained, thriving under full sun or part shade. While it loves basking in full sun, it remains quite adaptable and can comfortably handle part shade in open woodlands. When planting, bury the bulbs 4-6 inches deep and space them 6 inches apart in the fall. They’re quite tolerant and can thrive even in clay soils! Regular moisture is important during spring growth and bloom, but these resilient plants can manage drier conditions after blooming as they prepare for their summer rest. Once you plant them, it’s best to let them be! These lovely plants reproduce through bulb offsets and reseeding, and if you’re lucky enough to have cross-pollinated flowers, they will form seed capsules brimming with multiple seeds. While growing from seed is possible, keep in mind that these lovely plants won’t bloom until their third or fourth year.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
