Rhus aromatica

Also known as Fragrant Sumac, Aromatic Sumac, Lemon Sumac, Polecat Bush

The Rhus aromatica, often called Fragrant Sumac, is a delightful native Texas shrub that brings both color and a lovely aroma to any garden. This charming deciduous shrub features a low-growing, rambling habit and spreads through root suckers, creating cozy thickets in the wild. Typically, it grows between 2 to 4 feet tall (sometimes reaching up to 6 feet) and can extend up to 10 feet wide, making it an ideal choice for filling open woods, meadows, and thickets.

One of the most fantastic aspects of Rhus aromatica is its breathtaking autumn leaves, which transform into vibrant shades of orange, red, and purple. When the leaves are lightly bruised, they release an enchanting fragrance, lending to the plant’s delightful name. While its leaves may resemble those of poison ivy, no need to worry—Rhus aromatica is completely non-poisonous. In early spring, you can spot tiny yellow flowers blooming at the tips of the twigs. Male flowers appear in late summer and stay through winter, ready to bloom again in spring. As late summer rolls around, female flowers develop into small clusters of fuzzy, red berries that often continue into winter, attracting various wildlife to your garden.

Rhus aromatica thrives in dry to medium, well-drained soil and enjoys full sun to part shade. It's adaptable to many types of soil, as long as they aren’t poorly drained, making it a versatile choice for your gardening adventures.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
