Stachys coccinea

The stout, square stems of scarlet hedge nettle, also known as Texas betony, can rise to over 3 feet and are beautifully lined with a pair of dark-green leaves that gradually become smaller as they ascend the stem. This plant features an eye-catching inflorescence, which consists of an interrupted spike adorned with bright-red, tubular flowers that have a charming two-lipped shape. With its stout, erect, leafy structure covered in soft hairs, it showcases striking scarlet flowers that bloom in lovely whorls at intervals atop a four-sided stem.

What truly sets this species apart is its vibrant scarlet color, distinguishing it from its western relatives, which boast pink or purplish hues. When it comes to cultivation, Texas betony thrives best when grown from seed. While Stachy plants are often mistaken for nettles due to their resemblance, they lack the stinging hairs, making them a gentler choice. In the Old World, these plants were commonly found near hedges, earning them the nickname of hedge nettles.

Texas betony not only exhibits aromatic foliage but also puts on a stunning display of blooms. While early spring brings the heaviest flowering, its vivid scarlet blossoms grace the garden throughout the season, making it an excellent choice for ground cover in shady spots.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
