Artemisia 'Powis Castle'

Artemisia is a wonderful genus that includes around 200 beautiful evergreen and deciduous shrubs, perennials, and annuals, mostly found in the dry temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Many of these species boast lovely aromatic, pinnately divided, or delicately dissected silvery-green leaves, along with subtle flowers that might catch your eye if you look closely.

This genus takes its name from Artemis, the Greek goddess associated with the moon, wild animals, and hunting, which adds a touch of mystique to these remarkable plants.

One highlight is 'Powis Castle', a charming hybrid between Artemisia arborescens (large wormwood) and Artemisia absinthium (absinthe wormwood). This bushy, woody-based perennial or subshrub is cherished for its delightful, finely divided, silvery, fern-like foliage that resembles soft feathers. Typically, it grows into a lovely shrubby mound that reaches about 2-3 feet tall and wide, but it can spread through rhizomes and may expand to 3-6 feet wide if given the space. Though it rarely showcases tiny yellow-tinged silver flowers, in warmer winter climates, these wonderful plants remain evergreen, adding year-round beauty to gardens.

Introduced in 1972 from the National Trust's Powis Castle in Wales, 'Powis Castle' has earned quite a reputation. Allan M. Armitage even called it "one of the finest plants in cultivation,” and it proudly received the 1993 RHS Award of Garden Merit.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
