Dichondra argentea
Dichondra micrantha is a charming, low-growing groundcover plant that was once celebrated as a lawn alternative in the mild west. However, it fell out of favor as flea beetles made their presence known. Now, a related species, D. argentea, is stepping into the spotlight across the nation as a delightful trailing accent for containers and hanging baskets. This lovely plant features small, rounded leaves that look like tiny water lily pads and spreads beautifully by rooting its surface runners. Originally from Texas and Mexico, D. argentea is a hardy perennial suitable for zones 8 to 10, although it is often enjoyed as an annual in gardening.
The ‘Silver Falls’ variety of dichondra is particularly vigorous, creating a lush carpet of soft pewter leaves on silvery stems, thriving in full sun to partial shade. Its fan-shaped, shimmering leaves are carried on plants that only reach about 2 inches tall. The trailing stems branch effortlessly without needing to be pinched back. This resilient plant is heat and drought-tolerant, asserting its ability to bounce back after a little watering when it looks a bit wilty. In the Midwest, you can count on dichondra to stay free from significant insect or disease troubles.
‘Silver Falls’ dichondra shines beautifully on its own or in mixed containers, offering a lovely contrast to vibrant green foliage and colorful flowers. It’s perfect for hanging baskets, tall containers, or window boxes as a delightful alternative to licorice plants (Helichrysum petiolare minus ‘Silver Mist). When planted at the edge of a raised bed or rock wall, it will gracefully cascade over the side, reaching lengths of 2 to 4 feet. This versatile plant can also serve as an effective ground cover on well-drained soils, forming lovely dense mats that help keep weeds at bay. Consider pairing it with colorful foliage plants, like ‘Purple Knight’ alternanthera or sun-loving coleus. Plus, ‘Silver Falls’ makes a charming trailing filler for cut-flower arrangements!

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
