Achillea millefolium
Common yarrow, scientifically known as Achillea millefolium, is a lovely perennial plant that grows upright or spreads through charming rhizomes. Many admire its bold nature, as it easily naturalizes and spreads quickly. Originally from Europe and Asia, this delightful plant has made its way to America, where you can spot it along roadsides, fields, lawns, and waste areas.
With its feathery, fern-like, and aromatic foliage in a soothing medium green, the common yarrow truly stands out. In summer, it delights us with tiny white flowers that bloom together in dense, flattened clusters on sturdy stems rising 2-3 feet tall. The foliage releases a strong, somewhat spicy aroma that lingers even when dried, making it a favorite for those who enjoy crafting dried arrangements. While the species itself isn’t widely available in stores, many cultivars and hybrids of common yarrow have gained popularity in ornamental gardens. These varieties often boast stronger stems, a more upright growth habit, and beautifully prominent flowers that come in captivating colors like pinks, reds, creams, yellows, and lovely bicolor pastels.
The genus Achillea is named after the legendary Achilles f, a Greek hero who famously used the plant to help bleeding and heal his soldiers' wounds during the Trojan Wars.
To thrive, common yarrow prefers lean, well-drained sandy loams bathed in full sunlight. It adapts well to poorer soils as long as they drain properly, and it can handle hot, humid summers and drought conditions. When grown ornamentally, it enjoys being planted in areas shielded from strong winds. A great tip is to cut back the plant stems in late spring before they flower to keep them at a manageable height. After the initial flowering, trimming the plants back to lateral flower buds tidies up the garden and encourages a lovely second bloom. You can also cut them back to their beautiful basal foliage after blooming. To keep the planting thriving, consider dividing clumps every 2-3 years. Just remember, these plants are known for spreading vigorously through rhizomes and self-seeding, creating delightful colonies if they’re not kept in check.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
