Also known as Prairie Flameleaf Sumac, Flameleaf Sumac, Prairie Sumac, Lance-leaf Sumac, Lance-leaved Sumac, Texas Sumac, Tree Sumac, Limestone Sumac, Prairie Shining Sumac
Prairie Flameleaf Sumac is a lovely tree that can grow up to 30 feet tall, although it often stays around 20 feet. In the fall, you'll be captivated by its beautiful pyramidal panicles of bright red fruit, which follow the delicate white blossoms of summer. The leaves transform into stunning shades of vivid red or orange as autumn arrives.
This charming tree is native to areas ranging from southern Oklahoma through central and west Texas all the way to New Mexico, and further south to Puebla in central Mexico. It's a limestone-loving tree that's known for its fast growth and resilience. Generally pest- and disease-free, the Prairie Flameleaf Sumac can handle heat, cold, and even drought with grace. Its name truly reflects the stunning orange and red hues of its autumn foliage, but don’t overlook its pale trunk, green summer leaves, and those delightful clusters of red fruit in the fall.
While it can sometimes form a colony by sending up suckers from the base, it’s not as likely to spread aggressively as its neighbor, the Shining Sumac. In addition, Prairie Flameleaf Sumac shares the spotlight with the Evergreen Sumac, as both produce berries that make a delicious, tart tea rich in vitamin C when soaked in water.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
