Lobelia cardinalis 'Queen Victoria'

The cardinal flower, known scientifically as Lobelia cardinalis, is a delightful native perennial that thrives in the moist, cozy spots near streams, sloughs, springs, swamps, and low-wooded areas. This charming plant is a short-lived, clump-forming perennial that can grow to a height of 2-3 feet, showcasing large, vibrant red flowers on its unbranched, alternate-leafed stalks. The unique two-lipped tubular flowers feature three lobes on the lower lip and two lobes on the upper lip, adding to its beauty.

Among its varieties, 'Queen Victoria' stands out with her stunningly deep red flowers and rich dark burgundy foliage, making her a favorite among hummingbirds and butterflies alike.

Caring for this lovely plant is a breeze! It enjoys growing in full sun to partial shade and prefers rich, medium-to-wet soils. While it can adapt to brief flooding, keeping the ground consistently moist is crucial for its health. It does well in full sun in northern climates but appreciates some afternoon shade in the hot, lower Midwest and Southern regions. Plus, a layer of mulch helps to keep the soil cool and retain moisture, giving your cardinal flowers the best conditions to flourish.

Nectar Source Plant: Cloudless Giant Sulphur (Phoebis sennae), Pipevine Swallowtail (Battus philenor), Spicebush Swallowtail (Papilio troilus)

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
