Ajuga reptans Texas Tough is a low groundcover that grows under 6 inches tall with a dense cover of green, rounded, slightly scalloped leaves. It produces narrow spikes up to 10 inches tall with whorls of dark blue-purple flowers in abundance in spring. This plant can tolerate a wide range of conditions and can be grown in both sun or shade in reasonably well-drained soil. It can thrive in drier conditions than other Ajuga reptan selections and even be considered semi-drought tolerant in shaded areas.

It also thrives in full southern sun with 100% humidity and almost daily rains, providing solid ground cover. It is hardy to temperatures below 0 °F and remains evergreen in mild climates. This rugged, low-growing plant is suitable for use as a small-scale groundcover, a perennial border edging, or in a container. It forms a spectacular, weed-suppressing 4' wide patch in just two years. The dark blue flowers also attract butterflies. Other common names for this plant include bugleherb, bugleweed, carpetweed, and carpet bungleweed.
