Elymus canadensis

Common names include Canada Wildrye, Canada Wild Rye, Prairie Wildrye, Nodding Wildrye

Canada Wildrye is a versatile clumping cool-season grass with arching spikes that are reminiscent of wheat or rye. The spikes bloom with the summer and last into winter. Typically, this grass grows in clusters reaching heights of 3-5 feet, showcasing pointed, bluish-green to vibrant green leaves that hug the stems at their bases. As the flowers bloom, they emerge in arching, bristly spikes at the end of the stems that gently sway in the breeze. As fall approaches, the foliage and spikes take on a tan hue, continuing to add visual charm throughout much of winter.

This resilient grass can thrive in dry to medium, well-drained soils under full sunlight and easily adapts to a variety of soil types. It is excellent forage for both livestock and browsing wildlife alike, and the foliage provides nesting materials for birds. It serves as a larval host plant for the Zabulon Skipper Butterfly. Birds and small mammals eat the seeds.

It is notable that the barbed seed husks may pose the threat of eye injury to dogs or other animals of the same size, so it is inadvisable to plant this grass where dogs frequent.

Spring Shipping:

Orders are shipped within 10-15 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
