Lobelia cardinalis
Let’s take a closer look at the lovely cardinal flower, also known as Lobelia cardinalis! This charming native perennial likes to thrive in moist spots, often found near streams, sloughs, springs, swamps, and cozy low-wooded areas. It grows in cheerful clumps and can reach heights of 2 to 3 feet, flaunting its vibrant, red flowers atop tall, unbranched stalks with alternate leaves. The unique two-lipped tubular flowers feature three lobes on the lower lip and two on the upper, adding to its beauty. With its dark green, lance-shaped leaves that have delicate teeth, this plant blooms late in summer, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds, although cardinals tend to steer clear. You might also come across some delightful white and rose-colored varieties.
Caring for this gem is quite simple. It loves full sun to part shade and prefers rich, medium-to-wet soils. While it can handle a bit of brief flooding, keeping the ground moist is super important for its health. It does well in full sun in northern climates but enjoys a touch of afternoon shade in the hotter regions of the lower Midwest and South. Plus, a layer of mulch can do wonders by helping retain moisture and keeping the soil nice and cool.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
