Eustoma exaltatum ssp. russellianum
The Prairie Gentian features lovely blue-green leaves and upright stems that reach heights of 1 to 3 feet, beautifully adorned with a waxy bloom. These flowers truly stand out and can be found in stunning shades of blue, purple, pink, white, or vibrant yellow. They are elegantly bell-shaped and grow upright, each flower appearing singly at the tips of long stalks sprouting from short branches near the plant's top.
Depending on where it grows, this charming species can behave like an annual, biennial, or perennial. Most commonly in its native regions, it delights as a perennial. This particular subspecies, which was once referred to as E. grandiflorum, has earned a reputation as one of the most beautiful prairie wildflowers. The name Eustoma originates from Greek, combining "eu" (meaning "good") and "stoma" (meaning "mouth"), which describes the large opening into the flower's "throat" where the corolla lobes gracefully meet.
In Japan, they've been cultivating Texas Bluebells for over 70 years! There, this lovely plant is affectionately known as Lisianthus, an older name for the Eustoma genus. Enthusiastic breeders have created delightful pink, white, and deep purple-blue varieties featuring both single and double-petaled flowers. Yet, it’s important to note that Texas Bluebells are becoming less common due to their breathtaking beauty. They have been picked from their natural habitats in such great numbers that wild populations struggle to reseed.
The sizeable blooms showcase an intense hue, standing out splendidly while many other plants may appear crispy and brown under the summer sun. The blue-gray foliage adds a succulent touch to the scenery. In larger gardens, Prairie Gentians create a stunning display, especially when paired with Indian grass.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
