Also known as Pitcher Sage, Big Blue Sage, Azure Sage, Giant Blue Sage, Blue Sage
Salvia azurea, often called blue sage, is a lovely clump-forming perennial that typically grows between 3 to 5 feet tall (it may be shorter if you prune it!). From mid-summer to fall, you'll see delightful whorls of two-lipped, azure blue flowers blooming on tall spikes, gracefully perched atop sturdy stems adorned with linear to lanceolate and obovate, grayish-green leaves that can grow up to 3 to 4 inches long. This charming plant, Salvia azurea var. azurea, is native to the beautiful regions of North Carolina and Tennessee, spreading all the way down to sunny Florida and Texas.
Blue sage thrives in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils and loves soaking up the full sun! While it can handle drought conditions, it truly prefers moist, gravelly, or sandy soils with good drainage. In late spring, feel free to trim the stems back to half their height; this will help the plant maintain a nice, compact shape and prevent it from flopping over. Although these plants may flower continuously from summer to fall, make sure they get regular moisture to encourage this delightful display. Pruning away spent flower spikes can also help extend the blooming period. If the foliage starts to look a bit scraggly during the hot summer months, don’t hesitate to trim it back a bit. Just remember to give the plants a nice cutback after they've finished flowering to keep them looking fresh.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
