Hesperaloe parviflora 'Yellow'

Hesperaloe parviflora, commonly known as hummingbird yucca, false yucca, or samandoque, is a charming evergreen perennial succulent that bears a resemblance to yucca. This delightful plant hails from the beautiful Chihuahuan desert, which spans western Texas and northeastern Mexico. Here, it thrives in various settings, including deserts, prairies, rocky slopes, and mesquite groves. With its striking coral-red flowers, it has won the hearts of many and has become a treasured element in southwestern landscapes; meanwhile, the lovely yellow-flowering variety remains a rare but delightful find.

Although closely related to yuccas, Hesperaloe belongs to the century plant family rather than the yucca family. Its slender, graceful, sword-like blue-green leaves form attractive clumps that can grow up to 6 feet wide, with individual leaves extending 2-3 feet in length. In cooler winters, these leaves can take on a stunning purple or reddish-bronze hue, enhanced by delicate thread-like hairs along their edges.

The bright tubular yellow flowers rise elegantly above the leafy clump on tall flower stalks, which can reach heights of 4-6 feet. In milder winter climates, this plant delights with blooms from early to mid-summer, often reblooming into the fall. In warmer areas, it bursts into flower earlier and continues to charm throughout the year—making it a fantastic choice for attracting hummingbirds.

To keep this beautiful plant thriving, it prefers dry, sandy, sharply drained soils and loves soaking up full sun, making it perfectly suited for hot desert conditions. Interestingly, it is also surprisingly hardy in USDA Zone 5! The key to its success lies in excellent soil drainage. This resilient plant withstands heat and drought with ease, readily self-seeding in the landscape or propagating through clump division. Additionally, it adapts well to urban environments, making it a wonderful addition to any garden.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
