Hydrangea quercifolia 'Ellen Huff'

The oakleaf hydrangea, scientifically known as Hydrangea quercifolia, is a delightful shrub that typically grows upright and features broad, rounded forms. This lovely plant can reach heights of 4 to 6 feet, and sometimes even up to 8 feet. It’s a native of the enchanting bluffs, lush woods, ravines, and gentle stream banks spanning from Georgia to Florida and Louisiana. You’ll adore its stunning pyramidal clusters of white flowers that bloom in summer, adorning its exfoliating branches, which are embraced by large, dark green leaves with 3 to 7 lobes, resembling oak leaves.

The word 'Hydrangea' is derived from the Greek words for water and vessel, wonderfully reflecting the cup-like nature of its lovely fruit.

This plant gets its specific name from its charming leaves that resemble those of oak trees (Quercus).

To cultivate these beauties, plant them in rich, organic, well-drained soil with medium moisture, where they can soak up the sunshine or find partial shade. They thrive in moist environments and appreciate a lovely summer mulch to keep their roots happy and hydrated. Remember, blooming occurs on old wood, so it’s best to prune them right after they finish flowering—don’t worry, they usually need very little pruning! If any winter damage occurs, feel free to prune those stems in early spring. These plants love sheltered spots and could use some winter protection, like a cozy layer of mulch or a burlap wrap, especially in USDA Zone 5 if they’re not fully established yet. In extremely cold winters, where temperatures drop below -10 degrees F, be mindful that they could lose some flower buds or even die back to the ground, so taking good care of them will help ensure a beautiful bloom next year.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
