Also known as Common Sneezeweed, Fall Sneezeweed, Autumn Sneezeweed
Helenium autumnale, often lovingly referred to as sneezeweed, is a delightful native perennial from Texas that forms charming clumps and flourishes in the moist soils found along streams, ponds, ditches, and spring-fed meadows, as well as in prairies and wet open areas throughout much of the state. This lovely plant typically reaches heights of 3 to 5 feet, showcasing rigid stems that beautifully branch toward the top. It delights the eyes with clusters of daisy-like flowers featuring unique, wedge-shaped, bright yellow rays that surround prominent, dome-shaped, dull yellow center disks. Just as the name suggests, the stunning flowers bloom from late summer into autumn, accompanied by alternating lance-shaped dark green leaves.
The genus name has its roots in the Greek term "helenion," which is linked to the elegant Helen of Troy. While the connection between Helen of Troy and this special genus of plants, which are exclusively native to North and South America, remains a bit of a mystery, it adds a fascinating layer to the plant's story.
The specific epithet "autumnale" highlights the plant's enchanting autumn flowering. Helenium autumnale flourishes in a variety of soils, thriving best in average to wet conditions and basking in full sun. It loves rich, moist environments but isn’t a fan of dry soils, so make sure to keep it cozy! To help keep its stature in check, avoid over-fertilizing, as too much can cause the plants to grow a tad too tall. While not necessary, if you cut back the plants in early June (at least six weeks before the usual flowering period), you can help reduce their height and encourage more branching, which leads to a more vibrant bloom, healthier foliage, and less need for support. For more blooms, simply remove the spent flowers, and after flowering is done, give the plants a nice trim by cutting them back by half. To keep things lively, don’t forget to divide clumps as needed every 3 to 4 years to maintain their vigor!

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
