Anisacanthus quadrifidus var. Wrightii (Benny Simpson Yellow Hummingbird Bush named after Benny Simpson)
Anisacanthus quadrifidus var. wrightii, lovingly known as the Texas firecracker, is a hardy deciduous shrub that can reach heights of up to 5 feet and spread around 4 feet wide. With its lovely spreading appearance, this delightful plant is native to the extreme south-central region of Texas and nearby northern Mexico, where it thrives on rocky, calcareous slopes and floodplains.
The Texas firecracker showcases slender, brittle stems adorned with attractive, peeling bark and small, lanceolate-shaped leaves that nearly clasp together. During its vibrant blooming period, it bursts forth with bright yellow-orange tubular flowers that measure 1 to 1.5 inches long. These stunning flowers bloom abundantly after rainfall from spring to late summer, drawing in hummingbirds, butterflies, and other pollinators that add life to your garden. Interestingly, deer tend to steer clear of this plant, making it a great choice for various landscapes.
This hardy beauty thrives in medium to dry, well-draining soils under the warm sun. What’s even better is its adaptability; it can flourish in a variety of soil types, including poor, rocky, and even heavy clay. As a drought-tolerant gem, it can also be cultivated in pots, though desert landscapes may benefit from some regular summer watering. The Texas firecracker is hardy in Zones 7 to 10, and in cooler regions, though it may die back to the roots, it will joyfully reemerge with fresh growth in the spring.
While there’s no need for pruning, feel free to shape this lovely plant in the fall, or give it a more significant prune every few years if you wish.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
