Scutellaria ovata

Scutellaria ovata, commonly known as heart-leaved skullcap, is a pubescent mint family member featuring snapdragon-like, tubular, two-lipped, blue-purple flowers that bloom in branched terminal racemes in May to September on square pubescent stems with ovate, crenate-serrate, rugose, heart-shaped green leaves. Typically, plants grow between 16 and 24 inches tall. The skullcap is native to Maryland, Kansas, Tennessee, Texas, and Mexico.

It is suitable for dry to medium, well-drained soils in full sun and is drought-tolerant. Rhizomes spread the plant, which proliferates from seed and self-seeds in the garden. Plants may go dormant after blooming when it is hot and dry during the summer.
