Gelsemium sempervirens

Gelsemium sempervirens, affectionately known as False Jasmine, False Jessamine, or Carolina Jessamine, is a lovely evergreen twining vine that graces the landscape from Virginia all the way to Florida and westward to Texas and Central America. You'll often find it nestled in open woods, vibrant thickets, or winding along roadsides. This charming vine bursts forth with bright, fragrant, funnel-shaped yellow flowers, reaching up to 1.5" long, either sprinkled individually or gathered in delightful clusters from late winter to early spring (February – April, depending on where you are). These cheerful blooms often signal the delightful arrival of spring, marking the end of winter's chill.

As a lively vine, Carolina Jessamine can reach an impressive length of up to 20 feet on its wiry reddish-brown stems. If you choose to let it grow as a bushy ground cover, it will reach about 3 feet tall and can sprawl joyfully by sending out runners. The plant showcases shiny, lanceolate, light green leaves, measuring 1-3" long, that stay evergreen throughout the seasons but may surprise you with lovely yellow to purple hues in winter. In the northern stretches of its range, this plant is semi-evergreen. However, a word of caution: both its flowers and foliage can be poisonous if ingested. Also, you might notice that the vine's name is sometimes spelled as jasmine or jessamine, adding a little twist to its identity.

In 1924, Carolina jessamine was designated as the official flower of South Carolina.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
