Wisteria frutescens

Wisteria frutescens, affectionately known as American or Texas Wisteria, is a charming deciduous woody vine that can grow over 40 feet long! This lovely plant is native to Virginia, Illinois, Florida, and Texas and thrives in lush environments like moist thickets, swampy woods, pond edges, and stream borders.

What truly captivates the heart are its stunning, fragrant, pea-shaped lilac-purple flowers, which bloom in delightful drooping clusters from April to May, just after the leaves appear. The scent of these blooms is delicate and heavenly; if you’re fortunate, you might even enjoy another round of blooms in the summer! The foliage features beautiful compound, odd-pinnate leaves, each adorned with 9-15 lance-shaped leaflets.

Wisteria frutescens is a joy to grow and take care of. For the most breathtaking flowering, it loves to be planted in slightly acidic, humus-rich, moist soils with plenty of sunshine. While these lovely vines may start to produce flowers by their second or third year after planting, some might take a bit longer to show off their beauty. Regular pruning is important to keep the plant healthy and encourage those lovely blossoms; aim to prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. A sprinkle of fertilizer in early spring can give those flowers an extra boost!

It’s good to note that this plant is a bit picky about where it grows, so choosing the right location is essential since it doesn’t enjoy being transplanted. Fortunately, unlike its more aggressive cousin, Wisteria Sinensis (Chinese wisteria), Texas Wisteria is gentler and won’t take over your garden. So why not invite this beautiful and fragrant vine into your garden? You’ll be rewarded with its stunning flowers every spring!

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
