Penstemon barbatus 'Pristine Blue'
Penstemon barbatus, often affectionately known as bearded penstemon or beardlip penstemon, is a delightful native plant found on rocky slopes and in open woodlands stretching from Utah and Colorado to Arizona, Texas, and Mexico. This charming clump-forming perennial grows gracefully to heights of 1.5 to 3 feet. From late spring through summer, you can admire the loose terminal racemes of vibrant reddish-orange, two-lipped, tubular flowers (up to 2 inches long) that bloom atop erect, sturdy stems. The lower reflexed lip, often adorned with a soft covering of dense yellow or white hairs, adds to its unique beauty. The plant boasts narrow, willow-like, medium green leaves that are lance-shaped to linear (ranging from 2 to 6 inches long), and its oblong to ovate basal leaves often retain a touch of green even through winter. Hummingbirds are particularly drawn to the flowers, making it a lively addition to your garden.
The 'Pristine Blue' variety features breathtakingly deep blue blooms that grace your garden in late summer and linger through early fall. For the best growth, plant it in moist, well-draining soil. However, it’s resilient enough to thrive in neutral, alkaline, or acidic soils, and even adapts well to poorer soil conditions. To keep the blooms coming, remember to remove spent flowers throughout the growing season. Pruning the entire plant back in late fall after blooming wraps things up nicely for winter.
When creating a beautiful border or mass planting, space the Pristine Blue Beardtongue about 18 inches apart. In a container, it really stands out as a stunning focal point that’s sure to catch the eye.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
