Bouteloua dactyloides
Bouteloua dactyloides or Buffalo Grass is a native turf forming grass that spreads via underground stolons typically reaching maximum heights of 6-12”. It is a dioecious plant meaning that female and male flowers occur on separate individual plants. It can be found throughout the central United States reaching as far north as Canada and as far south as the southern most counties of Texas.
Buffalo Grass is the perfect alternative for those who would still like a traditional lawn but are tired of the mowing and watering required by traditional lawn grass species such as Bermuda or Kentucky Bluegrass. It also provides far more ecological value than non-native grasses species supplying not only seed forage for local bird species, but also supporting several native butterfly species including the green skipper (Hesperia viridis) which feeds only on Bouteloua species and the specialized Buffalo Grass Webworm Moth (Prionapteryx indentella) which feeds exclusively on Buffalo Grass. Once established this plant requires little to no care and is heat and drought tolerant - just make sure to provide a location with adequate drainage and at least 4-6 hours of sunlight daily.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
