Euphorbia antisphyllitica
Candelilla is a charming low-growing shrub that features delightful clusters of thin, upright, bluish-green stems, growing together in clusters that reach about three feet tall. In spring through early summer, you can spot its lovely small pinkish-white flowers blooming on its mostly leafless stems. The name "candelilla" means “little candle," a nod to its stems, which are covered in a waxy substance. This plant is perfect for raised planters, narrow planting strips, and cozy little rock gardens. It looks fantastic when paired with other low-water plants and succulents, adding a beautiful accent to your landscape. Candelilla is originally from the Trans-Pecos area of southwestern Texas and the stunning Chihuahuan Desert in Mexico, particularly in Durango, Chihuahua, and Coahuila.
As a moderate grower, this succulent loves to bask in full sun and soak up plenty of reflected heat. Once it's settled in, it requires very little water, but a bit of occasional irrigation during those hot, dry summers can really help it thrive. If your candelilla starts to look a bit scraggly, don’t worry! Just give it a heavy prune right down to the ground, and you’ll encourage a fresh burst of new growth.
Interestingly, a high-grade wax can be harvested from this plant by boiling it in large vats, a process you can often observe on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande. This versatile wax has a variety of uses, from making candles and soap to creating ointments, sealing wax, phonograph records, insulation material, shoe polish, floor polish, waterproofing, and lubricants.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
