Also known as Chinkapin Oak, Chinquapin Oak, Chestnut Oak, Yellow Chestnut Oak, Rock Chestnut Oak, Yellow Oak, Rock Oak
Quercus muehlenbergii, often lovingly referred to as Chinquapin (or Chinkapin) oak, is a delightful medium-sized deciduous oak from the white oak family. It typically reaches heights of 40-60' (and occasionally 80') and boasts an open, rounded crown. This beautiful species is native to central and eastern North America, thriving in dry upland sites, often within rocky, alkaline soils. In spring, as the leaves begin to unfurl, you can spot charming, subtle yellowish-green flowers appearing in separate male and female catkins.
The fruits are small oval acorns, about 3/4" long, nestled in scaly cups that reach roughly half the acorn’s length. These acorns are a treasured food source for many types of wildlife. The narrow, shiny green leaves, measuring 4-7" long, feature coarse marginal teeth, giving them a unique texture. They closely resemble the leaves of the chestnut (Castanea), whose nut is sweetly dubbed chinquapin, adding to the charm of this oak. Some might also know it as yellow chestnut oak. In the fall, the colors can vary, typically showing soft shades of yellow and brown, creating a gentle landscape touch.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
