Hibiscus laevis

Also referred to as Halberdleaf Rosemallow, Halberdleaf Hibiscus, Scarlet Rose Mallow, Halberd-leaved Hibiscus, and Halberd-leaved Rose-mallow.

Hibiscus laevis, often called smooth rose mallow or halberd-leaved rose mallow, is a charming native herbaceous perennial of Texas that thrives in the lovely wet soils along streams, rivers, ponds, ditches, and even swampy areas across much of the state. You can easily recognize it by its unique three-lobed leaves, which can grow up to 6 inches long and look like the halberd spear from the 15th-16th centuries. From mid-summer into fall, this plant showcases impressive, large flowers with five petals that can measure up to 6 inches in diameter. These beautiful blooms display a gentle array of white to pink petals, with striking maroon eyes, all sitting atop sturdy stems that rise between 4-6 feet tall. Each flower proudly features a prominent and eye-catching central staminal column. You might encounter it under its former name, Hibiscus militaris, which highlights the resemblance of its leaves to a military weapon.

For the best results, consider growing this lovely plant in organically rich, medium to wet soils while basking in full sunlight. Although it can handle a bit of light shade, the happiest blooms occur in full sun, providing an ideal environment to maintain health and resist potential diseases. This resilient plant also endures summer heat and humidity, as long as its roots remain comfortably moist throughout the growing season!

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
