Schizachyrium scoparium 'The Blues'

Little bluestem, or Schizachyrium scoparium, brings a touch of prairie beauty to your landscape. This charming grass flourishes in a variety of places, from vibrant prairies and open fields to sunny roadsides and peaceful meadows, stretching from Alberta to Quebec and down to Arizona and Florida. Once a key player in the grand tapestry of the tallgrass prairie, it thrived in the rich soils of central North America.

Typically, 'The Blues' reaches a lovely height of 2 to 4 feet, showcasing its graceful, upright clusters of slender, blue-tinted leaves that are about a quarter-inch wide. In late summer, you’ll see its pinkish-tinged stems and beautiful clusters of purplish-bronze flowers sprouting in 3-inch long racemes, gracefully arching above the greenery. As autumn arrives, the foliage transforms into enchanting burgundy-red hues, ultimately giving way to fluffy, silvery-white seed heads that can sparkle into early winter. This grass truly shines with its eye-catching blue leaves and stunning fall colors.

Caring for little bluestem is a breeze. It thrives in average, well-drained soil that ranges from dry to medium moisture, all while soaking up the warm sun. It's remarkably adaptable, happily tolerating various soil conditions, including clay and occasional wet spells, making it a fantastic choice for almost any garden. Once it’s established, it shows excellent resistance to drought and can handle the heat and humidity like a champ. For best results, cut it back to the ground in late winter to early spring and make sure it enjoys plenty of sunshine to keep it looking its best all season long.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
