Little Bluestem grows in prairies, fields, clearings, hills, limestone meadows, roadsides, waste areas, and open woods stretching from Alberta to Quebec to Arizona and Florida. Once a key player among the grasses of the tallgrass prairie region, it thrives on the rich and fertile soils.
This grass usually reaches a height of 2-4 feet (sometimes up to 5 feet) and showcases upright clumps of slender, flat, linear green leaves, each with a hint of blue at the base. In August, purplish-bronze flowers bloom in 3-inch-long racemes on branches above the foliage. These flowers give way to clusters of fluffy, silvery-white seed heads that are not only beautiful but often remain throughout the winter. Many gardeners especially admire this grass for its bronze-orange foliage color in the fall, making it a true seasonal highlight.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 10-15 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.

So far, the 30 pots of little bluestem are looking good! I was concerned about getting them through the mail, but they were well packed and all still in their pots and damp when I opened the boxes. The kids and I are getting them into the ground at a rate of 5 per day and watering both the planted and unplanted ones daily since we are in the grip of a serious drought here in the St. Louis area. I'm looking forward to the coming years when the row of grasses we got from you create a beautiful "fence" for the little nature area at our preschool. Thanks so much, Kristin Soifer Director, Samuel Preschool

The Little Bluestem grasses looked very healthy when they arrived. They are small but should do well since they are natives.

I ordered 3 flats of little bluestem but only had time to plant one flat before the rains began. The plants were well packed to survive shipping. I bought 2 flats last May and they are a beautiful addition to my meadow garden.

These came packaged well and appear very healthy. They seem to have taken to the native soil nicely as well.

Only 1 out 4 pots I received are actually little bluestem. Other pots are predominantly a different grass than what I ordered. Also, I ordered 1 gallon size pots and received 1/2 gallon size.

The Little Bluestem grass arrived in perfect shape, expertly packed and on time. They've been repotted and are doing great! Lovely plants in the peak of health!

These were in good shape when I bought them. I plan to divide them and don’t want to do that until cool weather, so they are still in the pots. Maybe can update in the spring.

Native Gardeners one of the only nurseries in North Texas to order this gem grass, once covering the landscape in North Central Texas. Truly a beautiful grass, mid size, with a beautiful cinnamon color in the fall! Cut it back around Valentine's day to have the best new graowth.
