Also known as Mexican Feathergrass, Mexican Wiregrass, Finestem Needlegrass, Ponytail Grass, Texas Tussock
Nassella tenuissima, known as Mexican feathergrass, is a perennial grass characterized by its delicate texture and clumping growth. It is native to the open, rocky scrublands and forested slopes of the mountainous Trans-Pecos region in Texas, extending west to southern New Mexico and as far south as central Mexico. A separate native population exists in Argentina and Chile. Mature clumps can attain a height and width of 1-2 feet. The slender, upright leaves are light green and change to a golden brown in winter. During summer, the plant produces wispy, upright to gently arching panicles bearing small, silvery yellow spikelets. The mature fruits present a feather-like appearance due to a thin, light brown terminal bristle that can grow 2-4 inches long. It is synonymous with Stipa tenuissima.
For optimal growth, plant in well-draining, sandy, rich loams that are evenly moist to dry, and in locations with full sun to partial shade. While it can tolerate rocky and clayey soils, excessive moisture should be avoided. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and may enter dormancy during summer droughts. Trim back foliage in late winter before new growth begins in spring. This grass readily spreads by seed under suitable conditions. It is hardy in Zones 7-10.

Winter Shipping: We will continue to ship throughout winter. If you prefer, we are happy to hold your order until spring; please include that request in your shipping notes.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
