Eragrostis spectabilis

Also known as Purple Lovegrass, Purple Love Grass, Purple Plains Lovegrass, Tumblegrass, Petticoat Climber

Eragrostis spectabilis, or purple love grass, is a warm-season bunchgrass that's native to sandy soils stretching from Maine to South Dakota and all the way south to Florida, Texas, Arizona, and Mexico. This charming grass features flat, coarse, green leaves that come together in a somewhat relaxed clump and can grow up to about 10 inches tall. Come August, you’ll be treated to soft, reddish-purple flowers that spill out in a lovely, airy display, making the grass clump pop and reach as high as 24 inches. As the season changes into October, these flowers gracefully turn brown and lose their color. When the seeds mature, the inflorescence often breaks free from the plant and dances along the ground like a tumbleweed, spreading its seeds as it travels.

Purple love grass really flourishes in average, dry to medium, well-drained soils under full sunlight. It loves sandy or gravelly loams in hot, dry spots and shows impressive resilience in infertile soils too. Thanks to its excellent drought resistance, this grass can spread by self-seeding and by the stems rooting along the ground at the nodes. If you're interested in propagating it, you can easily do so using either seed or division in the spring.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
