Rudbeckia fulgida 'Early Bird Gold'

Orange Coneflower, Orange Rudbeckia, Perennial Black-eyed Susan, Goldstrum

‘Early Bird Gold’ is a delightful little black-eyed Susan that typically reaches about 2 feet tall, proudly showcasing its sturdy, upright stems adorned with oblong to lanceolate dark green leaves. This charming plant was first discovered in a lovely field of Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii ‘Goldsturm’ at Dupont Nursery in Louisiana. From mid-June through October, it bursts with charming daisy-like flowers (3-4 inches in diameter) that feature cheerful bright yellow rays and a lovely dome-shaped dark brown center cone, blooming singly atop strong, occasionally branching stems. This cultivar is known to be day-neutral, meaning it blooms regardless of day length, allowing for a fantastic display from late spring right through to fall.

It's a breeze to grow in dry to medium, organically rich to average, well-drained soils under full sun. While the best blooms happen in full sun, these resilient plants can also tolerate a bit of light shade. They really appreciate consistent moisture during the growing season, but once they're established, they're pretty forgiving of drought. 'Early Bird Gold' is adaptable to a variety of growing conditions, thriving even in dry soil, clay soil, and bustling urban environments. To keep them healthy, good air circulation is a must. Remember to deadhead the spent flowers to encourage more blooming! These lovely plants slowly spread in the garden through rhizomes, making them a delightful addition to any space.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
