Leucophyllum candidum 'Silver Cloud'

Brewster County Barometerbush, Violet Silverleaf, Boquillas Silverleaf, Purple Ceniza, Cenizo

L. candidum is a plant closely related to L. frutescens. It's smaller and more compact, featuring beautifully silvery leaves that almost appear white. This plant stands out with its vibrant violet flowers that bloom during the summer and fall, responding charmingly to humidity or rainfall. It’s native to the stunning gravelly hills of Big Bend National Park and the Black Gap Wildlife Refuge in Southern Brewster County, part of the Trans-Pecos region. Typically, it thrives in limestone-origin soils, especially on caliche hillsides. Since it’s tailored for alkaline and well-drained soils, it’s perfect for arid regions or low-maintenance dry gardens. Just like its cousin L. frutescens, violet silverleaf loves being planted in highly well-drained alkaline soil under full sun, as too much water or poor drainage can be harmful, while shade may lead to sparse, leggy growth and fewer flowers.

For those gardening in areas with high rainfall or less-drained soil, planting it in raised beds can work wonders! If the soil leans acidic, a sprinkle of dolomitic limestone will help. Fertilizing isn’t necessary for these charming plants. Cenizos are quite resilient, with minimal susceptibility to pests or diseases, apart from cotton root rot, which can usually be kept at bay with well-drained soil. While violet Silverleaf doesn’t require pruning, gentle trimming can be beneficial just before buds form in late winter or early spring. It's hardy in temperatures down to 5-10 degrees F. Notably, Benny Simpson introduced two wonderful selections of L. candidum: 'Silver Cloud,' celebrated for its rich purple flowers and silvery leaves, and 'Thunder Cloud,' which is smaller and even more floriferous than 'Silver Cloud.'

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
