Salvia chamaedryoides

Salvia chamaedryoides is such a lovely, mostly evergreen subshrub that forms a charming, dense mound while spreading gracefully. This beauty reaches heights of 12 to 18 inches and spreads out to 3 to 4 feet wide, growing from shoots that emerge from a spreading rootstock. Its middle tends to mound up nicely, with branches softly draping along the ground.

You'll notice its small, narrow, half-inch-long gray-green leaves paired with delightful dark blue flowers that pop up almost year-round! During the cooler seasons, it loses a few leaves and becomes somewhat semi-deciduous, but from mid-spring to late fall, it’s in full bloom, creating a vibrant display.

To keep Salvia thriving, place it in a sunny spot or very light shade and ensure it’s nestled in well-draining soil. Once established, it’s quite low-maintenance, requiring little watering. Hardy enough for temperatures as low as 5-10°F, it can flourish in USDA zones 8 and even 7, as it bounces back beautifully after a freeze. In hotter inland areas, a little afternoon shade and occasional irrigation help it stay happy. This wonderful plant shines as a sparkling blue flower ground cover in dry or occasionally irrigated gardens and makes a fantastic choice for the front of the border. Plus, it’s a magnet for hummingbirds and other pollinators!

Germander Sage calls the high Chihuahuan desert home, thriving at elevations between 7,000 and 9,000 feet in Mexico's Sierra Madre Oriental mountain range. The name Salvia hails from Pliny’s writings about this plant, derived from the Latin word 'salvere', which means "to save," a nod to the historically believed healing properties of various Sage species.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.

When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.

Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.

5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.

Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.

Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
