Salvia × sylvestris 'Mainacht' May Night
This nonnative hybrid perennial Salvia, commonly known as wood sage, comes from the lovely combination of S. nemorosa and S. pratensis. With its charming clump-forming habit, it boasts beautiful, medium-green leaves that are oblong to lanceolate in shape. The flowers of Salvia x sylvestris are large, tubular, and two-lipped, usually gracing our gardens in shades of blue to lavender purple. Most of the blooms appear between late spring and early summer, but you might spot some sporadic flowers throughout the summer as well.
This plant enjoys dry to medium, well-drained soil and thrives in full sun. It flourishes in moist, humusy soils with good drainage, and also does well in gravelly or sandy soils, showing an impressive resilience to drought. While these plants can bloom repeatedly during summer, providing them with regular moisture helps to boost their flowering. In optimal growing conditions, they may spread quite quickly! To keep the blooms coming, don't forget to remove spent flower spikes. They really appreciate cool night temperatures, so they perform their best in areas north of USDA Zone 7.
As summer progresses, you might notice that they can become a bit floppy and open up, especially in hot and humid climates. If that happens and they start to look a little less than perfect, you might want to consider trimming them back to the basal foliage. Remember to cut back the plants after they've finished blooming. For propagation, you can use softwood cuttings or divisions. Some hybrid wood sages may be sterile, while others can grow from seed, though they might not come true. A select few will indeed come true from seed.

Spring Shipping:
Orders are shipped within 7-10 business days. We will email you if there are expected delays.
When you order plants from our nursery, you can expect them to arrive in the best possible condition. Our team carefully packs each order using sturdy, biodegradable packaging materials.
Your plants' appearance may vary depending on the season and their current growth stage. We may cut back the leafy growth of some plants to prepare them for shipment and transplanting.
5 Gallon and Up: Any plant purchased to ship over 5 Gallons will be shipped bare root. This means we will remove the plant from its original pot, remove the soil surrounding the roots, and wrap the roots with a biodegradable plastic bag. This reduces weight and the likelihood of damage during shipping.
Once your plants arrive, it is essential to plant them as soon as possible. This will help them rebound and thrive. If you cannot plant immediately, water regularly and keep the roots off heat-conducting surfaces.
Newly transplanted plants often require more water until their roots are well established. Plan to water them 1-3 times weekly for the first few months.
